Isaiah is a working class Kansan taking on the Topeka establishment

Isaiah was born and raised in Kansas State House District 3, and now he’s running to represent the community that shaped him. District 3 deserves a working-class champion who understands its people and will fight for their future.

Platform

Lower Healthcare Costs

Kansans are getting ripped off by the Topeka Elites. Because our state legislature is bought and paid for by the private healthcare industry, our hard earned tax dollars are getting sent to other states while rural hospitals shut down and ordinary Kansans go into medical bankruptcy. No Kansan should be forced to choose between buying groceries or affording healthcare. Isaiah will vote to expand KanCare, bring our tax dollars back home, and make health care more affordable for everyone.

Higher Wages

We all want the same thing: to work hard and get paid fairly in return. But for nearly two decades, corporate interests have pressured our legislators to keep the minimum wage at $7.25 an hour while the cost of living has continued to rise. Isaiah will support raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour, phased in over time so businesses can adjust, so that wages in Kansas start to catch up with the reality people are living in today.

Empowering in Labor Unions

Isaiah understands that unions are the most powerful tool working people have to raise wages, improve working conditions, and hold corporations accountable. As a proud dues-paying member of UFCW Local 2, Isaiah knows firsthand what we can achieve when workers stand strong together. In the Kansas House, he will fight to protect every worker’s right to organize, crack down on union-busting, and ensure labor laws are actually enforced.

Investing in Education

Kansas used to have one of the best education systems in the country, but the failed Brownback tax experiment gutted school funding and we’re still feeling the effects. At the same time, we’re losing out on revenue as people drive only 10 minutes to cross state lines to legally buy cannabis. Isaiah will support legalizing, taxing, and regulating cannabis, and using that money to reinvest in our schools, support teachers, and rebuild the quality education our kids deserve.

Meet Isaiah

A photo of Isaiah Harris.

Isaiah Harris knows what it’s like to be working class in Pittsburg ... because he is. His struggles are your struggles.

Isaiah comes from struggle. Raised by a single mom who worked multiple jobs to support her and her children, he believes that anyone working 40 hours should be able to afford their rent and have money left over. He is running because he is sick and tired of our out-of-touch state government that makes decisions about our lives without understanding that even if you work sixty hours a week, success isn’t guaranteed.

He knows well the importance of community-centered mutual aid, having relied on the Wesley House throughout his childhood and SEK-CAP’s Family Emergency Shelter, before the elites in Topeka decided helping families stay afloat wasn’t worth their time or money anymore.

He also knows better than most the difficulties that those working hard and trying to get ahead face. Our district is one of the poorest in the nation on average by yearly income and net worth. In order to address this, our representatives seriously considered adding hurdles to enrolling children in free and reduced lunches. This is a moral outrage. We deserve leaders who actually fight for working families, not for their corporate donors.

Isaiah works full time at a grocery store, and helps support his wife’s in-home daycare when he gets home. His lived experience has taught him how tough it is for families to pay their bills and to find affordable childcare, both growing up poor and seeing it all around him in his adulthood. He earned a degree from Pittsburg State and stayed rooted in the place that raised him. Isaiah Harris is a working-class man, running to make life more affordable for our working families and seniors.
